My Experience As A Research Assistant With DR4WARD - Fall 2011
Guest post by Brianne Boysen
I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Ward aka DR4WARD as a research assistant at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University for the Fall 2011 semester. I have learned a lot and have enjoyed the experience and will be continuing to work together with DR4WARD for the Spring 2012 semester. We have been working together on a large project to create curated digital and social media content and resources. Here is a link to the curated resources: @DR4WARD Curated Marketing, Digital, & Social Media Resources: Infographics, Slideshows, Flowcharts, Video, Studies, Etc. The goal is to create a structured online and interactive database for curated content so that students, colleagues, alumni, staff and professionals can find and share digital and social media resources more easily for teaching, research, and learning.
Along with this research, I have published and helped curate digital and social media content on the DR4WARD blog using social media monitoring to connect with and learn from thought leaders and to find the best content. The DR4WARD blog contains up-to-date content on social media, marketing, digital, advertising, and higher education. The majority of the content I have been publishishing is infographics, slideshows, and videos. I have learned how to use social media monitoring resources using advanced tools on Twitter, Posterous, Google Reader and G+. DR4WARD and I have also used Twitter analytics tools to track his hashtags and Klout to calculate our influence across the web.
We want the digital and social media resources to be more easy to find, so our search engine optimization (SEO) techniques are very important. We meta-tag each blog post and curate the posts according to category and keywords. We also share the content on many social networks including Twitter, G+, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
DR4WARD explained early on to me his goals for helping people find and share digital and social media resources more easily. To help with that I have had meetings with several people including designer/librarian, Penelope Singer. I briefed her on some of the ideas DR4WARD and I have been focusing on including folksonomy tagging, structured vs. unstructured data, and data visualization. Penelope suggested we also research usability, organization, and design. We will be looking into all of these concepts in more detail in Spring 2012.
DR4WARD has also been inspired by the social media tool Pearltrees and the idea of “mind-mapping” to transform the curated content into something less linear and more the way our minds think. In addition, he wants the curated content to be highly connected with the Newhouse website. We will continue to research tools for next semester with the goal of creating a unique user experience.
My research assistant position has also allowed me to work on my own personal branding by positioning myself within the social media community via the web. I have gained followers on both Twitter and Google+ that share the same career interests as myself. I have grown my web presence by expanding the social media tools I use, such as Twitter, Google+, and Pearltrees.
In addition to working with DR4WARD this semester, I have broadened my own interests and depth of knowledge by attending speakers at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. These include Bill Halpin from Google, John Hill from LinkedIn, and Mike Cassidy from Undertone Advertising.
DR4WARD and I meet online daily with social media and face-to-face weekly to continue our research. Stay tuned for our progress next semester!
I look 4Ward to your feedback.
