Monitoring, Listening & Sharing

 1.  Set up a free Gmail Account / G+ Account and Complete your Profile

Free Gmail Account - Your free Gmail account supports many free, Internet Marketing digital tools that we will be learning in class, like Google Reader and Google Alerts. You can also set up your Gmail so you will receive it on your mobile phone.  Many of the smartphones now have Google Mobile Applications that you can download to make using Google on your phone even easier.

2.  Google Alert - Set up a Google Alert using the search term "Social Influence"

  • Type: Select Everything.
  • How Often: Select as-it-happens
  • Email length:  Select up to 20 Results
  • Delivery to: select your free Gmail address.

After you receive an email from Google Alert, go back and edit your Google Alert to Deliver to: your Google Reader.  Which method of deliver do you prefer?

05-02_google_alerts
Note: We will set up a Google Alert in class for "DR4WARD" so you should already be familiar with this tool, but here is a reminder.

Google Alert is a free, automatic monitoring or listening service to help you monitor the web for new content of your choice.

  •         Sign into your free Gmail account that you set up for class.
  •         Click on "More" in the upper left Tab Bar.
  •         In the drop down box click on "Even More" at the very bottom of the list.
  •         This will take you into "More Google Products." Alerts is the first tool on the top.
  •         Click on Alerts and it will bring you to a screen that looks like the one above.

3. Google Reader. Go to DR4WARD.com Images and click on the RSS icon/button and subscribe to the blog feed using the Google Reader that we setup in class.

  • Google Reader and RSS Feeds allow blogs, websites and news feeds to find you.  RSS in Plain English #video

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and allows you to easily subscribe to blogs, websites and news feeds. It is usually found as an orange button that looks like the icon seen next to this paragraph or the letters RSS. Sometimes you have to search to find the button on the website. However, you will often easily find it in on the right of the web address window on the toolbar of your browser.

Google Reader is a free, web-based aggregator that allows you to keep up with your favorite websites in one place and is as easy as checking your email or Twitter.  Google Reader constantly checks your favorite news sites and blogs for new content so you don't have to. This is one way that busy marketing professionals manage information overload with the 'firehose' of information available on the web.

4.  Subscribe to 5 new blogs from the Top 50 Marketing Blogs of 2011 and What Blogs Should You be Reading And Who Should You Follow On Social Media list above that you find interesting. Using your RSS icon/button and add to your Google Reader.  Try to pick some from each category so you get a variety of great ideas, perspectives, and content.

5. Find & Follow - Find & Follow the Twitter userids and G+ profiles for the 5 new blogs (people / organizations) you are following.  These links / userids are often listed right on the blog or have the Twitter icon to click on.

6.  Add to your Twitter list and Create a G+ Circle - add the 5 new people that you are following to your "Social Media Pros" list you create.

7.  Tweet & G+ - Post a Tweet and on G+ to the class recommending they follow these 5 new people and explain why. Include the #NewhouseSM4 Hashtag in your Tweet and the individual Twitter usderids with the @symbol and +with name. (You cannot use the same 5 people as other students)

8. Tweet/Link - Post a Tweet and to G+ with a link to the homepage or a post from one of the 5 new blogs you are subscribing to. Include the #NewhouseSM4 Hashtag in your Tweet and G+ post.

9.  RT - Retweet to Twitter & G+ one of the posts from a different Marketing Pro that you follow that you found interesting.  Be sure to include their Twitter userid with the @symbol and to give them credit. Include the #NewhouseSM4 Hashtag in your Tweet.

10. Reply - @reply on Twitter & G+ - to a different marketing pro that you follow and who follows you and thank them for something that they shared that you find interesting. Tell them why? Include the #NewhouseSM4 Hashtag in your Tweet.

11. Post a Comment on a Blog - Post a comment on one of the most recent posts from one of the new blogs you are following that you find interesting.

You can post comments on any blog that has comments enabled. Some are posted immediately and some are reviewed before posting. The location of the comments is located just below the blog post and usually require you to sign in to prevent spamming and verify your identity. Use your Twitter UserId to sign in for the comments if given the option.

In your comment let them know you are studying Social Media Theory & Practice with @dr4ward at @NewhouseSU, that you subscribe to their blog, add the class Hashtag #NewhouseSM4, and follow these helpful tips for commenting.

12.  Tweet the Comment & Post to G+ - After posting a comment you can Tweet and Post to G+ that you just shared a comment on a blog and add the link. Many blogs provide a "Tweet This!" button to help automate this but you may have to cut and past this. Add the class Hashtag #NewhouseSM4.

13.  Feed Follow the conversation / comments by subscribing to the comment feed for the post.  Scroll to the bottom of the post and click on the RSS comment feed for the post and add it to your Google Reader. You can follow the comments in Google Reader without having to go back to the blog to see what is being said.

14. DM - Direct Message on G+ Instructor Assistant +Lynessa Williams when you have completed this list.

Reminder - Hootsuite Pro and Use Hootsuite Pro to Post Your Weekly Tweets:  Over the course of this week (Mon., Feb. 6 through Sun., Feb. 12) send at least 20 class related tweets. Tweets not related to class do not count for the total. Use the class Hashtag #NewhouseSM4 for all class related Tweets.

Note: You cannot accrue the 20 tweets at one time, on one day. They must be spread out over 5-7 days with a maxium of 4 tweets per day counting towards your total. (Ex - 3 tweets per day x 7 = 21 or 4 tweets per day x 5 = 20)
